2016 marks University Settlement's 130th anniversary. This goes beyond candles in a birthday cake - it's more than a century of pioneering change, empowering leaders, and supporting the communities where we work.
It's 130 years of being at the forefront of the battles our city is facing. This year, we're seeing homelessness at a level that hasn't been seen since the Great Depression; an ever-rising population of older adults, sitting on waitlists for benefits programs they so desperately need to survive; gang violence that is devastating neighborhoods, destroying families and increasing despair. There are many challenges ahead that the City needs to address.
But we can't wait for change. We have to make it happen.
That's what University Settlement does. We forge ahead to address these problems with the input and support of our communities:
- We've been a leader in eviction prevention with our Court Navigators and Project Home programs.
- We've expanded our free and low-cost older adults programming, acting as a valuable resource for nearly 3,000 seniors every year at 4 sites.
- We've been a safe haven in times of crisis, but have gone beyond that with constructive neighborhood conversations and activities. We've built partnerships with local businesses, other community organizations, and police to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
The Settlement House model that we embody is precisely what New York City is so desperately in need of right now. It's more than finding short-term and long-term solutions to critical problems - it's being a spark of change, a source of empowerment for others, so that we can all have a more prosperous, peaceful future.
Help us continue our critical work for the communities we care for by making a gift today.
