Pioneering services for all New Yorkers in need - that's what we do.
Imagine the stress you would feel raising a family on an income of less than $20,000. Or worrying about whether or not you’ll be able to pay rent and still have enough money left over to feed your family. Or fearing the loss of a loved one because of the high rate of gun violence in your neighborhood.
Now imagine those same feelings overwhelming the mind of a small child; it’s not hard to see how the impact would be detrimental. In fact, new research shows that the “toxic stress” that comes with growing up in communities with high rates of poverty, crime and violence can have deleterious effects on a young brain, manifesting later in educational deficits, behavioral issues, and worse.
Unfortunately, these are facts of life for many of the children we see in University Settlement’s early childhood programs – but thanks to your support, these facts don’t have to be life sentences. At University Settlement, children have been our priority since our earliest days pioneering kindergarten in New York City. Because of donors like you, we continue to be pioneers today, leading a movement to find innovative, effective ways to care for the mental health of very young children and their families, particularly those experiencing toxic stress.
But we don't stop there. Our diverse programming is here for people of all ages - from fitness classes for seniors, to after-school programs for middle and high schoolers, to early intervention programs for young children who just need some support, all of our programs forge strong bonds with children, families and communities. We can only do that thanks to your strong bond with us.
